Flamingo

Most of all we were impressed by crocodile park Krokotaun - a buffer zone around where Yucatan crocodiles live and breed, pink flamingos and many other species of animals and birds. Rio Lagartos (Rio Lagartos) - Crocodile River is located on the coast of Mexico. From a small fishing village on a motor boat we made our way through the mangrove jungle, which had hundreds of species of birds and crocodiles, and entered the pink flamingos park. This is one of the few places on earth where you can see the pink flamingos in the wild. Pink flamingos’ color is caused by eating little red crustaceans that contain carotenoids. Redness of feathers depends on how much carotenoid was taken with food. Young birds and birds in captivity, receiving insufficient carotenoids are white. The birds are strikingly impressive with their ease and elegant grace. Their snow-white plumage, as it dissolves in the reflection of the pink salt, and bright red and black patches on the flap rhythmically merge with purplish-black circles, floating in the tired eyes of the observer. The pink flamingo eats mainly small reddish shrimp Artemia and its eggs. In addition, the flamingos feed on other crayfish, and mollusks, insect larvae, worms. The food they were looking at shallower depths.
The total body length 130 cm, the birds reach the masses 3,4-4 kg. On each foot they have 4 fingers. If flamingos do not alarmed, they nestle at one place every year. We were lucky to see them quite close. Going deep in the water, her long legs, a flamingo puts her

head under the water and digging with its beak in the bottom of the reservoir. This crown of the birds is almost touching the bottom, the upper jaw is at the bottom and the bottom - at the top. The flamingo drink fresh water during the rain, licking the cascading drops down their feathering. Their nests have the shape of conical towers that birds shovel out in mud and plaster. They lay 1-3 eggs, which are white with very faint olive-green, oval elongated, with pointed ends, the size of an ordinary chicken egg. We were told that hatching takes 30-32 days. To get out of the nest, flamingos have to tilt their head, and using the beak as a support they can straighten the legs. It was interesting to see the birds getting into the air: first bird runs in shallow water with long strides, swinging its wings, and then they continue walking a while on the water surface and finally the bird takes off into the air. Now it is uniformly flaps its wings, its body stretched out like a stick, the legs thrown back, the neck thrust forward. Birds, especially flying high, quickly disappear from sight, and the sense of reality begins to obscure, if not for the characteristic guffaw.
