| Isla
Mujeres (Island of Women) is another attraction. This is where we took
a small ferry boat, and 20 minutes later were on the island. If you believe
the official version, the island received its name at the very moment
when, in March 1517 a Spanish expedition that scoured the waters in the
Caribbean in search of slaves to the Cuban mines, moored on the unnamed
island. Ashore, the sailors, in the person of Francisco Hernández
de Córdoba, officially recognized as the discoverer of the island,
found a lot of bare stone statues (Mexican scientists believe that those
were the statues of a local goddess Ixchel and immediately gave the island
its name, with characteristic bluntness of Spaniards - Isla Muheras.
They were engaged in their industry throughout the Caribbean and from
time to time returned to the island to hide the earnings. They say Henry
Morgan’s proceeds are buried somewhere here. Island in the absence
of men was controlled by their women, specially invited for this purpose
from other continents. Thus, the permanent residents of Isla Mujeres
were women - hence the name - The Island of Women. Sometimes pirates invaded the island and their presence on the island hasn’t remained unnoticed - some of them have achieved prosperity and were able to provide themselves with the island real estate, for example, Esq Furman Anonymous Mundasa-and-Marecheaga, a Spaniard by nationality and romantic traveler by way of life, owned about 40% of the land on the island. Travelers can enjoy his estate called Vista Alegre - Happy vision. |
In
the estate was all that to age: the exotic animals and songbirds, thickets
of fruit trees and plantation of orchids - the garden under the name
Rose of the Winds, designed as a sundial: the shadows of the trees
could learn during the day. |
